Kitchen Appliances in New Homes

Replacement Kitchen Appliance Trends

The market for kitchen appliances has changed quite a bit in the past few years - as you may have noticed if you've checked out any local appliance showroom lately!

The NAHB Research Center conducts an Annual Consumer Practices Survey, and has all the latest on the market for replacement kitchen appliances.  Remember, this tracts replacement appliances, not new home appliances - but you'll probably see some similarities!

Ranges and Ovens - Appliance Trends

Freestanding oven/range combinations are becoming less popular for remodels, as more unique cooking options become available.

2005 - Freestanding ranges = 50% of market share.

2008 - Freestanding ranges = 41% of market share.

Homeowners replacing appliances are looking more closely lately at combination purchases of both a cooktop and one or two wall ovens.

2005 - Combination cooktop and wall oven = 25% of market share.

2008 - Combination cooktop and wall oven = 36% of market share.

Smoothtop ranges versus traditional burners have varied a bit over the past few years as remodeling homeowners choose new kitchen appliances.

2005 - Traditional burners = 52% of market share

2007 - Traditional burners = 44% of market share

2008 - Traditional burners = 47% of market share.

Kitchen Appliance Trends | What Kitchen Appliances are People Buying Today?

Gas is becoming less common than electric, in the world of ranges, ovens, and other cooking appliances.

2005 - Electric cooking equipment = 63% of market share.

2008 - Electric cooking equipment = 66% of market share.

Are more family gatherings and home-cooked events on the horizon?  Single wall ovens became less common, while their double oven counterpart increased in popularity.

2005 - Double ovens = 39% of market share.

2008 - Double ovens = 45% of market share.

Microwaves - Kitchen Appliance Trends

There's no cooking appliance quite as quick and convenient as the microwave.  How many times have you used your microwave this week?  The survey showed that microwave sales have continued to grow, but the type of microwave being purchased for kitchen remodels has shifted a bit.

2005 - Microwaves integrated into range or wall oven = 9% of market share.

2008 - Microwaves integrated into range or wall oven = 13% of market share.

This makes sense in connection with the selections of separate cooktops and wall ovens instead of more traditional oven/range combinations.

Countertop and under-cabinet mounted microwaves kept their market share, at about 53% of total market share.

Refrigerators - Kitchen Appliance Trends

Anyone who has owned a home more than 10 years has probably replaced a refrigerator, and with all the vast improvements in energy efficiency over the past years, it probably makes a lot of sense to at least consider a switch.  So what are homeowners looking for in their new refrigerator?

2005 - Side by Side Refrigerator = 45% of market share.

2008 - Side by Side Refrigerator = 43% of market share.

2005 - Freezer on top, refrigerator on bottom = 43% of market share.

2008 - Freezer on top, refrigerator on bottom = 38% of market share.

2005 - Refrigerator on top, freezer on bottom = 12% of market share.

2008 - Refrigerator on top, freezer on bottom = 22% of market share.

Washers and Dryers - Home Appliance Trends

New Home Kitchen Trends | Kitchen Appliance Trends | Custom Homes Raleigh NCPersonally, I think washers and dryers have made the greatest strides lately towards efficiency.

Today's best washers and dryers use a fraction of the water and power required by your mom's washer and dryer.  And with as many clothes as we go through in my home, I'm confident I'm reducing my footprint just a little every time I wash.

2005 - Front loading washing machine = 40% of market share.

2008 - Front loading washing machine = 44% of market share.

All statistics courtesy The NAHB Research Center Annual Consumer Practices Survey (CPS).

If you're looking to buy a new home in the Raleigh area, you'll want to keep future resale in mind as you make your new home appliance selections!  Keep in mind that these survey results are from remodel or replacement purchases, not new homes.
