Closet Storage Ideas for Your New Home

Designing Closet Space For Maximum Organization!

Whether you're working to design your new home, or looking to organize your existing home, you're going to love these closet ideas!

 

A closet storage system doesn't have to be big or elaborate.

Even a couple of carefully placed shelves and multiple height rods can make a huge difference!

On a budget?  Many of these ideas can be duplicated with ventilated wire shelving in place of custom built and painted wood shelving.

The contrasting color on the closet walls is a nice touch too!

 

 

 

 

 

In a larger closet, a full "built in bookcase" idea can work very well. 

It's probably better to use spacious shelves and organize smaller items in baskets or labeled bins that sit on the shelves.

These shelves will hold anything from piles of jeans to folded sweaters.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 With a little higher budget available, the sky is the limit.  Talk with your builder - we schedule a meeting directly with the trim carpenter to discuss your storage ideas. 

Custom built drawers and cabinetry are just some of the options.  Drawers are more complicated to build, with more moving parts, so be ready to up the price tag if you'd like to include some custom drawers. 

Bring lots of pictures of what you have in mind! 

 

 

 

 

 

A window in a closet can be a nice feature - the natural light can make a big difference. 

Storage systems can be planned right around the window - whether shelving or hanging rods.

A built in bench or seating area is another attractive option - what a great place to put on your shoes!

 

 

 

 

 

 

Have a large shoe collection?  The built in shoe rack on the left is sure to hold them!

This closet is "His and Hers" - an extra large closet, it's divided in the center, with wrap around shelving and multi-height hanging rods.

 

 

 

 

 

Even a secondary closet can stay more organized with a stack of built in shelves.

A long closet can be divided in the center - multi height hanging rods and shelves on one side, a floor to ceiling stack of shelves in the center, and a full height hanging rod on the other side.

Talk to your new home builder about what you have in mind! 

Some builders can even customize your closet space further by changing the layout and the wall structure, to incorporate the kind of storage you have in mind.

What, exactly, is a butler's pantry?  One formal definition says "A serving and storage area between the dining room and kitchen."  Today we'll show you how it can be much more - and can even be located in a few other convenient areas!

For anyone who ever wished for a little more storage space in the kitchen, or a place to keep the good china where it can actually be reached, a butler's pantry is the perfect storage solution.

 

A Butler's Pantry can generally be found in between the Kitchen and the Formal Dining Room.

Butlers Pantries make great use of small hallways, particularly around staircases.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

A Butlers Pantry can also be tucked in an alcove off the dining room itself.

The Butlers Pantry can include decorative shelves or display areas, plate racks, wine racks, stem glass holders, and more.

One of the most common things homebuyers are looking for is extra storage space. 

Whether it's a larger pantry, a bigger master closet, or simply a convenient place to store coats and shoes, one of the most common changes we make to a floor plan is to find some more places to have belongings organized and readily accessible.

Here's an example.

 

This particular floor plan gets rave reviews.  The downstairs bedroom with full bath makes an excellent in-law suite, guest bedroom, or simply a terrific home office.  The two story family room is very open and the two story foyer just adds to the spacious feeling.

So what's missing?

You may not notice until you move in...

and try to put your coat away.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

This is an example of a very simple, easy change that we were able to make. 

If you look at the original floor plan, you'll see that the entrance to the small hallway leading to the downstairs bath and bedroom was right on the corner of the foyer wall with the niche. 

By extending that wall about two feet back, we were able to make space for a nice coat closet, convenient to the front door.

 

 

Instead of having a small hallway, the study/bedroom doorway now opens directly into the room, with no loss of usable space.

Below, you can see the closet that was worked into the hallway. 

And the only additional cost?  Because this change was decided before construction began, cost was very minimal.  One interior door, one wire shelf, some trimwork, and a small bit of additional labor. 

 

 

 

 

 

  

 

 

 

 

 

 

If you have a floor plan that you love, but wish it had more pantry or storage space, bring it to your local custom home builder.  When no structural changes are required, it may be easier than you think to find exactly what you're looking for.
