How to Choose Your Kitchen Sink Style

The kitchen sink and faucet you choose are essential features - the kitchen is one of the most used rooms of the home, and you will use your sink every day.
Take a look at these recently completed NC custom homes for 2012 kitchen sink and faucet design ideas.
Types of Sinks: Stainless Steel, Cast Iron, Composite
Stainless steel sinks are one of the most popular choices for custom home kitchens. Stainless steel sinks are easy to clean and durable.
The lower the gauge of the stainless steel, the higher the quality of the kitchen sinks.
Lower-gauge = thicker metal.

Enamel coated cast iron sinks are becoming more popular in custom home selections. Cast iron sinks are:
- Usually a beautiful white, but can have more color options
- Heavy - the under cabinets must hold the additional weight
- Prone to scratches and wear, over a period of time

Composite sinks can be a more popular when trying to meet a budget. Composite sinks can:
- Come in a variety of colors
- Scratch and stain more easily

Sink Positioning
The kitchen sink can be placed under the counter (an under mount sink) or on top of the counter (a rimmed sink).
Under mount sinks have no rim or edge to catch water, dirt, and food particles.
Under mount sinks require a solid countertop made of materials like corian, granite, cement, or stainless steel.
Rimmed sinks (pictured to the right) are mounted above the countertop, smoothly integrated into the counter.
Rimmed sinks are not limited to solid countertop materials.
Sink Sizes: Large Single Bowl, Two Bowls with a Ratio
Custom home kitchen sinks usually come with one or two bowls, although some gourmet kitchens use three bowl sinks.
1. Single-bowl: can accommodate large objects like pots and pans
2. Double-bowl: more convenient for prep work, can accommodate a range of objects of various sizes. Typically double-bowls come in a 60-40 size ratio.
Sink Faucets and Special Features
Two of the most popular custom home sink faucet special features are the spray arm and the pot filler.
A spray arm is an additional attachment that can be installed next to the sink faucet, or it can extend out of the faucet. The sprayer helps wash larger objects or reach out to fill containers. 
A pot filler - used to fill large pots - is installed above the kitchen range. The faucet arm folds against the wall, and can extend out to reach over a pot on the stove.
The Worthington (pictured above) is a great example of a gourmet kitchen designed for frequent cooking - with the convenience of a pot filler.
