Raven Rock State Park is located in Lillington, NC, about 1 hour from the Raleigh area and about 30 minutes from Sanford.

Raven Rock offers hiking, camping, picnicking, canoeing, fishing, horseback riding, and educational events.

There are 11 hiking trails and 2 bridle trails.

Campbell Creek Loop Trail is the one "moderate" difficulty trail, and leads to the Lanier Falls overlook.

Most trails are kid and pet friendly. Horses are only allowed on designated bridle trails.

 

 

 

Raven Rock Loop Trail leads to the 150 foot tall, more than 1 mile long Raven Rock.

Raven Rock State Park rangers regularly hold educational events.

Educational materials are designed for grades 5-8.

Topics of interest include the geoloic processes that created Raven Rock along the fall zone. 

 

 

 

 

Fishing is best at the Fish Traps (located on Fish Traps Trail) and the mouth of Campbell Creek (located on Campbell Creek Loop Trail).

 

The rapids at Lanier Falls and Fish Traps along the Cape Fear River offer 56 miles of canoeing.

 

 

 

 

 

After a long day of hiking or fishing, visit one of the picnic areas for lunch. There are a total of 27 picnic tables and 8 grills.

Outdoor Ice Skating Downtown Raleigh, Greensboro, and Charlotte

Where to go Ice Skating Outdoors in the Raleigh Area 

Get into the holiday spirit and experience the excitement of ice skating outdoors, at one of several greater Raleigh area locations.

The tradition continues this year, with two outdoor ice skating rinks available in Raleigh.  Raleigh Winterfest is located in downtown Raleigh and Raleigh on Ice is located at the North Hills Shopping Center.

At the Raleigh Winterfest, you will be guaranteed snow on "Sledding Sundays"!

There are two other Raleigh area ice rinks open now, in Greensboro and Uptown Charlotte. Check out these North Carolina outdoor ice rinks, open through Christmas and New Year's.  

Raleigh Winterfest

 

Location: Downtown Raleigh, in City Plaza on Fayetteville Street next to the Bank of America building

Open: Friday December 4^th 2010 though Sunday January 30^th 2011

Hours: The rink is open seven days a week, including 4pm - 9pm on Christmas day and 11am - 11pm on New Year's Eve. The rink is closed on Mondays for private parties.

Cost: Admission is $8, including skate rental. 

Special Events:

• "Sledding Sundays" are December 19, January 9, and January 16, and will feature snow created by SnowMyYard.com
• "Family Tuesdays" cost only $20 for a family of three or more to skate
• "Music Craze Wednesdays" feature live music from 5 pm to 9pm.

• "Date and Skate Thursdays" feature free carriage rides from 5 pm to 9 pm for those skating

 

Raleigh on Ice

Location: North Hills Shopping Center, on Six Forks Road just north of I-440

WFMY News 2 Winterfest

Location: Downtown Greensboro, in Festival Park on Davie Street

Open: Wednesday November 17^th 2010 through Saturday January 22^nd 2011

Hours: The rink is open seven days a week. Hours vary by day and depend on whether public school is in session.

Cost: Admission is $8, including skate rental. If you have a group of 20 or more, the cost is reduced to $6 per person. Admission is for a 90-minute skate time.  Season passes are available for $75.

Greensboro's Winterfest Rink is open for public skating, hockey, exhibition figure skating, beginner lessons, movie nights, and can be rented out for private parties. The rink is 40-feet by 85-feet. 

WBT Holiday on Ice in Charlotte

Location: The Green in Uptown Charlotte between South Tryon Street and South College Street on the block south of East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.  

Open: Wednesday November 24^th 2010 through Saturday January 8^th 2011

Hours: The rink is open seven days a week, including 5pm - 10pm on Christmas day. The rink has extended hours from December 22^nd through January 1^st.

 

 

 

 

 

Cost: Admission is $7, with a $3 skate rental. If you have your own skates, you only pay the $7 admission. Admission is good all day long. Season passes are available.

Accommodations: Lockers, snack bar, skate rental house with socks mittens, and various accessories for sale. There are several restaurants surrounding the rink, including The Sandwich Club, Matt's Chicago Dog, and Fuel Pizza.

 

Special Events:

• Santa will be on site December 11^th, 18^th, and 19^th.

The rink is almost 5,000 square feet. The rink is open for group outings, birthday parties, or holiday parties.

Only Cash is accepted. ATM machines are available.

Silk Hope Winery - Over 15 Wines to Sample

 

You may be surprised to learn that North Carolina is one of the most active wine-producing areas of the United States. For example, the annual "Great Grapes" fair in Cary draws dozens of wineries and thousands of attendees wanting to experience what NC wineries have to offer.

 

Last weekend we visited an up-and-coming winery that first planted in 1997 and had its first vintage of wine in 2000 - the Silk Hope Winery. The trip was on a whim, but we ended up pleasantly surprised by both the winery and the wines themselves.

  

 

You first drive up a long gravel entry road to the Silk Hope Winery itself, 2.5 acres located on top of one of the largest hills in the area - great climate for producing high-quality wines.

You are invited into a metal building that serves as a processing center, warehouse, and showroom for the Silk Hope Winery. You can tour through boxes of wine ready to purchase, fermentation equipment, or head straight to the back, where they have tables, chairs, and a bar prepared to welcome visitors.

With over 15 wines to sample, I recommend at least two trips to the Silk Hope Winery, or else you might not remember the second half of the wines as much as the first.

  

 

The Silk Hope Winery sampling menu is helpfully divided into red and white wines, and you can choose to mix and match how you like. Bonus: you get to keep your glass, labelled with the logo and name of Silk Hope Winery!

Grapes being grown at the Silk Hope Winery include, but aren't limited to: Chambourcin, Cabernet Franc, Norton, Vidal Blanc, and Traminette.

Silk Hope Winery is planning on opening more outdoor drinking and relaxation areas, including a gazebo and picnic facilities out in the middle of the vineyard.

From Raleigh: Take Highway 64 East just past Pittsboro. Exit onto Highway 87 North (to the right), and then left onto Silk Hope-Gum Springs road. There is a large white sign on your left at the entrance to Silk Hope Winery.

SpiceCubed - Straight from the Pantry

We interviewed David about Spice Cubed to get some first-hand information about this exciting local small business, and his answers are below.

1.       How did you decide to start SpiceCubed?

I’ve been in the restaurant industry for the past 20 years, with the majority spent in catering.  Over the years I have collected and refined some great spice blend recipes.  One day, while clearing out my spice cabinet at home I realized that I needed a better way to organize my spices and get some of the fresh herbs and spices I was used to using at work.  I found some great tins and decided to attach magnets to the back, that way I could keep my spices on the fridge for easy access. 

After a bit of work and some web savvy, I had over 60 varieties in my collection with more on the way, all offered online for everyone across the country to buy for their own kitchen.

2.       What do your customers love about SpiceCubed?

Our customers love the freshness, the way they can organize their spice collection, and the convenience of online ordering.  Our prices are great compared to the major brands and our shipping is kept as low as possible.

3.       What are the benefits of owning a small business like Spice Cubed in Raleigh?

I grew up in Raleigh, and have worked here most of my life. Raleigh is a great town and will always feel like home.  Owning a business here is great because of the diversity of people, traditions and culture.  I have always loved the big cities like London and New York because of their limitless access, but have been able to find anything I really need around here, from fresh goat cheese to fresh Thai basil.  You just need to know where to look and who to ask.

4.       How will the catering aspect change SpiceCubed?

I have been the executive chef for a local caterer for the past six years and have recently been given the opportunity to take everything over on my own. 

I am combining my knowledge and experience of catering with my spice tin business and I expect the two to complement each other perfectly.  Now people who love my cooking can buy the spices, and people that love my spices can try my cooking.

5.       What will the new catering division of SpiceCubed be able to offer that’s different from other catering companies?

Our new catering menus, which are almost carbon copy from the past few years, are all-inclusive.  While most caterers charge extra fees for staffing, tables, chairs, linens, etc, we include that in our menu pricing.  

Combined with the great banquet halls available on our campus, we offer very competitive pricing for the area and a very full menu, from chicken wings to sea scallops with truffle oil, with open bar packages available as well.  Unlike before, we now offer our services off-campus to anywhere in the Triangle.

Harry has been selling guitars in Raleigh for 25 years now.  And he's really good at it. 

With a selection that includes Fender, Gretsch, Eastwood, Hofner, Samick, Yamaha,
C. F. Martin, Taylor, James Goodall, and many, many other guitar favorites, plus amps, pickups, guitar parts, instructional books, and much more, there's plenty for any guitar lover to add something to their collection.

Harry and I talked about how Harry's Guitar Shop has become a Raleigh small business landmark.

"I was living in Carrboro, and there just weren't enough people there to make another music store there workable- so I started looking at Raleigh," said Harry. "It has turned out to be a very good place to plant a new business, with a strong support for music and arts here."

Harry isn't kidding.  Music and the arts have a permanent place in Raleigh, and it's never too late to start learning.

That's one of the things this Raleigh guitar shop does best - guitar lessons!

I asked Harry how many students, adult and kids, started lessons at Harry's but had never played guitar before.

"Lots!! In 25 years- thousands of folks have taken lessons from us- many from scratch- others started on their own, and needed a little help," said Harry.  "Almost everyone can learn to play enough so that its enjoyable to them."

"Some are happy playing songs for themselves, some want to play at a more complex level- but in reality, it's all music, and it's good for the soul."  It's a simple philosophy, but one that rings true throughout Harry's Guitar Shop and the friendly, helpful staff you'll find at every visit.

If you're thinking of guitar lessons, it's never too late to get started!  Harry's Guitar Shop has ten teachers that offer lessons 6 days a week, and about 350 people come to Harry's Guitar Shop every week for personal lessons.

As you would imagine, after 25 years in the music business, Harry has seen a lot of different instruments and heard a lot of stories.  I asked him to share one of the most interesting things he'd ever seen.

"One day someone brought me an old arch-top guitar into the shop and wanted some minor repairs done. Lots of guitars have a story," said Harry.  "This customer went on to tell me that the family legend was that this guitar had once belonged to Charles Manson. (yikes!) We fixed up the guitar- and hope that we sent it on down the path to spread only good music and not evil!"

What brings people back to Harry's Guitar Shop, over and over?  Harry summed it up very well.

"We really like guitars, and amps, and feel a kinship with the people that play them," said Harry. "We are very lucky to have something in common with our customers. The hope is that we can make it more fun, every day."

Margaux's Restaraunt also offers both full catering services and large party rooms available for your celebration. 

The fabulous Bordeaux Room can accomodate 65 guests, perfect for engagement parties, retirement parties, and much more.

The Rotisserie Room (pictured) can easily seat 12 to 18 people for a special night.

The entire Margaux's restaraunt can also be available for events for 150 to 275 people, on Sundays.

"Oh, it's wild that day," laughed Hilary Green, manager of ReTails.  "We really try to make it fun." 

Green was talking with me about "Clean Sweep Sunday", during which EVERYTHING is 50% off at the local ReTails thrift shop.

And when was the last time you got a discount for doing the Chicken Dance?

ReTails is a Raleigh thrift shop that does things a little differently.

Every day at ReTails has something fun to offer, and it's more than just a great staff and shopping.  Check out this month's event calendar, and you'll find "Go Green Day", "S'mores Day", "The Name Game", "Boredom Blasters", "Name that Word", and even "Chicken Dance Day"!

ReTails Helps Reduce Pet Overpopulation

ReTails has a warm atmosphere and lots of action.  And 100% of the profits support THE $20 FIX, a targeted financial assistance program serving low-income pet owners, created by Raleigh non-proft AnimalKind. 

"No matter what their personal circumstances are, people will be generous to animals," said Green. "And accidental litters do happen.  Our mission is to focus on low cost solutions to pet overpopulation, targeted to low income families."

What Can You Find at ReTails Thrift Shop?

But it's not just a great cause that keeps people shopping at ReTails.  Thrift store shoppers can find housewares, clothing, electronics, jewerly, art, and much more. 

"We have wonderful donors.  We often recieve 30 to 50 donations per day," said Green. "We have a very small regular staff, and the rest of the work is done by our terrific volunteers."

ReTails Thrift Shop in Raleigh accepts donations Tuesday through Saturday from 10am - 5pm and Sunday from 1pm - 4pm.  Click here for a list of items accepted.
