Federal Building Century Post Office - Downtown Raleigh Walking Tour - Raleigh Relocation Package - Fun Things to Do in Raleigh

This historical building was originally called just the Federal Building.  The Federal Building was the first major Federal Government project to be built in the South after the Civil War.

Alfred B. Mullet, head of the Office of the Supervising Architect of the Treasury Department, designed the Federal Building using the Second Empire style.  Mullet designed many other government buildings built during the post-Civil War time period, including the Old Executive Office Building near the White House.

Construction on the Federal Building began in 1874, and was completed in 1878.  The Federal Building originaly contained all the local offices of federal agencies.  The largest spaces were allocated to the post office on the first floor and the U.S. District Court on the second floor.

The U.S. District Court had 80 seats, and was considered the best in the state at that time.

But Raleigh continued to grow.

By 1913, the post office had outgrown it's original space.  The Federal Building was enlarged to double it's original size.  Only 35 years after originally opening, the interior was completely refinished, and the outside facade was altered to what is seen today.   Even through this refurbishment, the original materials and detailing were kept as much as possible.

In 1939, the Federal Building grew yet again, with a large addition on the rear that fortunately still matched the original design.

Federal Building Century Post Office - Downtown Raleigh Walking Tour - Raleigh Relocation Package - Fun Things to Do in RaleighAfter World War II, Federal Government experienced a great deal of growth, and Raleigh was no exception.  Most of the other federal agencies gradually moved out of the Federal Building to temporary locations, until the completion of the new eight story Federal Building east of the original in 1970.  The original building was renovated yet again and renamed "Century Station", as it had just passed the 100 year mark.

Today, the Federal Building Century Postal Station is a working post office with additional office space.

It was dedicated to the National Historic Building Register on May 6, 1971.  Come mail a letter and check out the building at 300 Fayetteville Mall during normal business hours!

Confederate Monument at Raleigh State Capital Grounds - Downtown Raleigh Walking Tour - Raleigh Historical SitesRaleigh, NC offers a lot more than a great career environment, culture, parks, and recreation.

There's also a lot of history here - and the Downtown Raleigh Walking Tour is a good way to get a view of some of that history.

The Confederate Monument on the Raleigh State Capital grounds is just one more site to see when touring downtown Raleigh.

The three bronze statues on the Confederate Monument represent the three branches of the Confederate forces - the Infantry, Calvary, and Artillery.

There are two 32 pound cannons mounted on either side of the monument.

The Confederate Monument was created to honor North Carolinians who served in the Civil War.

The inscription reads "First at Bethel, Last at Appomattox", representing the fact that both the first and last soldiers to die in the Civil War were from North Carolina.

Confederate Monument at Raleigh State Capital Grounds - Downtown Raleigh Walking Tour - Raleigh Historical SitesMore than 125,000 North Carolinians fought in the Civil War, out of a total population of about 1 million.

More than 20,000 were killed, and another 20,000 died from disease, which means that North Carolina lost more soldiers than any other Confederate state.

In contrast, about 10,000 North Carolinians have died in every conflict since.

The Confederate Monument was unveiled on May 20, 1895 with many distinguished guests present, including Captain Samuel Ashe, Governor Elias Carr, and Julia Jackson Christian, the granddaughter of Stonewall Jackson.

During construction of the Confederate Monument, a time capsule was placed in the cornerstone.

This 1894 capsule includes things like Confederate currency, maps, legislative bills, newspapers, copies of journals, flags, a Confederate song book, and personal items belonging to General Robert E. Lee.

The Confederate Monument is located on the west side of the North Carolina Capitol grounds at the end of Hillsborough Street.

Today there is a backdrop of loft skyscrapers, and walking just a short block further will bring visitors to the revitalized Hillsborough Street, with shops, restaraunts, and nightlife.

The First Baptist Church can be a bit confusing.  There are actually two churches, one block apart, called First Baptist Church.

Both were originally the same congregation, originally founded in 1812.

Originally a biracial congregation, in 1868 African American members of the church left to form their own congregation.  In 1904, this beautiful brick church was built.

As part of the walking tour, you'll notice four churches, one at each of the four corners facing the State Capital Square.

Christ Church was built in 1848, and is a National Historic Landmark.  The fourth is First Presbyterian Church, built in 1900.

Raleigh area architects Murray Nelson and Thomas W. Cooper designed the Agriculture Building, which houses the State Department of Agriculture

The Agriculture Building was constructed in 1923, and is a nice example of the Neoclassical Revival style that was common in that era.

The exterior is nicely detailed, particularly the entry facing the State Capital.

The three story tall columns and well-balanced stone exterior give the Agriculture Building a stately look reminiscient of some of the government buildings in Washington, DC.

As a point of interest - a rear wing was added in 1950 to house the state Museum of Natural Sciences.  However, the collections quickly outgrew the space, and the Museum of Natural Sciences now has it's own building a few blocks away.

Raleigh Historical Buildings: Christ Episcopal Church (1854) - Take the Downtown Raleigh Walking Tour

Raleigh Recreation: Looking for something fun to do this weekend?

Try a walking tour of the Downtown Raleigh Historical District!

Raleigh Historical Buildings - Christ Episcopal Church 1854 - Downtown Raleigh Walking Tour

Christ Episcopal Church will catch your eye as you walk or drive through downtown Raleigh.

Not only is this beautiful stone church visually appealing, it is actually the oldest example of early Gothic Revival style in the South.

Richard Upjohn, who designed Trinity Church in New York and founded the American Institute of Architects, designed this building in 1848.

Raleigh Historical Buildings - Christ Episcopal Church 1854 - Downtown Raleigh Walking Tour - Raleigh Recreational Activities

The sanctuary for Christ Episcopal Church was consecrated in 1854, but Christ Church was actually organized in 1821, so this stone church replaced the original frame structure.

The bell tower was completed 7 years later, in 1861.  It is of different color stone, and is topped with a gilded weathercock.

A common Civil War tale is that the bell tower's rooster was the only chicken left in town after Sherman's troops went through Raleigh.

Raleigh Historical Buildings - Christ Episcopal Church 1854 - Downtown Raleigh Walking Tour - Raleigh Recreational ActivitiesStarting in the 1870s, stained glass memorial windows gradually replaced Christ Church's original clear glass windows.  The last stained glass window was installed in 1897.

The only alterations to the interior of Christ Church have been to the altar and lighting.

However Christ Episcopal Church itself has expanded quite a bit - though all has carefully been done in the same style and materials as the original structure.

Raleigh Historical Buildings - Christ Episcopal Church 1854 - Downtown Raleigh Walking Tour - Raleigh Recreational Activities

The first major expansion was actually designed by Hobart Brown Upjohn, the grandson of Richard Upjohn, the original architect.  In 1914, a parish house and chapel were connected to the sanctuary with arched cloisters.

Additional expansions were completed in 1941 and 1970.

Raleigh Historical Buildings - State Bank of North Carolina (Built in 1813)

Downtown Raleigh offers some great walking tours and historical buildings.  One of the buildings that you'll want to take a look at is the State Bank of North Carolina.

Raleigh Historical Buildings - State Bank of North Carolina - Downtown Raleigh Walking Tour

This stately building was built in 1813, though some records state 1812 or 1833.  The brick building with towering pillars is Raleigh's oldest surviving financial and commercial building.

The architectural style incorporates the transition from Federal to Greek Revival.  This Raleigh historical building was commissioned and first used for the State Bank of North Carolina.

The first bank president lived in the building.

Raleigh Historical Buildings - State Bank of North Carolina - Downtown Raleigh Walking TourIn another note of trivia - US President Andrew Johnson's father once worked here.  Jacob Johnson worked as a porter for the Raleigh branch of the State Bank of North Carolina.

In 1873, the building was acquired by the nearby Christ Church for use as a rectory, but the building's banking career was not yet over.

In 1968, the North Carolina National Bank purchased the original State Bank of North Carolina building and moved it 100 feet southeast.

Raleigh Historical Buildings - State Bank of North Carolina - Downtown Raleigh Walking Tour

The North Carolina National Bank renovated the building, and used it as their downtown branch, bringing the building back to it's original purpose - though probably with some high-security additions!

In 1975 and 1976, this building was a center of historical activity, as it was used by the State Bicentennial Commission.

Today the building is again the home of a bank - it serves as a branch of the State Employees Credit Union, and is a registered Raleigh Historic Landmark.

The State Bank of North Carolina is stop #25 on the Downtown Raleigh Walking Tour that highlights more than 60 sights to see in downtown Raleigh.   Stop #1 is the Raleigh State Capital.  Grab your walking shoes, or hop on a Raleigh Rickshaw, and get your tour started!

The building is located at 123 New Bern Avenue, and is open during bank hours.
