University of North Carolina Hospital in Chapel Hill
It's hard to miss the signs for UNC Hospital, whether driving north on 15/501 from Chatham County, or west on 40 from Durham. This is a big, reputable hospital - and it's getting bigger as we speak, as the new North Carolina Cancer Hospital is slated to open in 2009. It's located in the center of Chapel Hill, on the south end of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill campus.
This "hospital" actually consists of a multitude of buildings and hospitals, each with different functions, including:
- NC Memorial Hospital
- NC Children's Hospital
- NC Women's Hospital
- NC Neurosciences Hospital
- Ambulatory Care Center
- Urgent Care Center
- Clinical Cancer Center or NC Cancer Hospital
- UNC School of Medicine
The UNC Family Practice Center is very close, at the corner of Manning Drive and US 15-501.

UNC Hospitals at Chapel Hill have been recognized for the past 15 years by US News and World Report for a variety of specialities. US News ranks about 5500 US hospitals, and the University of North Carolina Hospitals have had rankings in the top 50 over and over. In 2007, the specialties that were recognized are:
- Cancer - the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center is one of only 40 National Cancer Institute designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers, with extensive work in breast and GI cancers.
- Ear, Nose, and Throat - has been recognized separately since 1952, and recently has become a leader in cochlear implant surgery which allows many deaf people to regain functional hearing.
- Gyncecology - known as a leader in advanced laparoscopy, gynecologic surgery, treatment of cancers, and maternal-fetal medicine.
- Kidney Disease - comprehensive treatment includes 7 outpatient clinics, community-based dialysis units, and kidney transplants.
- Respiratory Disorders - leading center for cystic fibrosis, lung transplants, sleep disorders, and many pulmonary diseases.
- Urology - the UNC hospital at Chapel Hill provides expertise in all areas of clinical urology.

NC Memorial Hospital at Chapel Hill
- This is the original hospital, opened in 1952.
- Every year, patients here represent all 100 North Carolina Counties, and even some surrounding states.
- 708 bed medical center.
- One of three Raleigh area Level I Trauma Centers - Level I Trauma Centers provide the highest level of surgical care to trauma patients, and are required to have a set number of surgeons and anesthesiologists on duty around the clock, along with education, preventative, and outreach programs. The other two Triangle area Level I centers are the Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC and the Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.

NC Children's Hospital at Chapel Hill
- 33,000 children from all North Carolina Counties come to the NC Children's Hospital for treatment
- All pediatric specialties and subspecialties are represented.
- Nationally recognized leader in cystic fibrosis and other respiratory disorders, hemophilia, sickle cell disease, cancer, heart disease, and trauma, including severe burns.
- Specializes in treating children with gastrointestinal disorders, infectious diseases, birth defects and problems of growth and development.

NC Women's Hospital at Chapel Hill
- Offers classes, including Prepared Childbirth for Twins, Triplets, and Beyond; Prenatal Yoga; Bootcamp for Dad's; Baby in the Dog's House (preparing pets for a new arrival); Moms and Emotions; and Choosing and Using Childcare.
- Offers free Doulas during childbirth - sign up ahead of time.
- "Visit the Nursery" online - give friends and family a password, and they can see live video from the hospital nursery of your new little one.
- Leader in robotic surgery and laparoscopic (minimally invasive) surgery.
- Complicated pregnancies - patients are referred to UNC from across NC and even from neighboring states.
- Infertility - a full line of services is offered, including invitro fertilization.

NC Neurosciences Hospital at Chapel Hill
- Separate hospital opened in 1995.
- Patient and family friendly environment, common areas and beds designed to look more like a home than a hospital.
- Focus on brain-mapping techniques and gene therapy, as well as the latest psychiatric care methods.
- This building also houses the Aeormedical facility, for airborne patient transportation services.

With all of these many specialities and focuses, the campus is pretty big. If you've got an emergency, don't worry, there's plenty of signs leading straight to the ER.
But if you're new to the area and going to a first appointment, you may want to print off a site map of the campus. Especially with the construction on the Cancer Center, the access roads and parking areas within the hospital can be a bit confusing.
