New Home Staircase Design: Post to Post and Over the Post Systems

New Home Staircase Design

Post to Post Versus Over the Post Staircase Systems

When building a custom two story home, you will need to consider staircase style and design options. The staircase is often placed within view of the foyer, so it has the ability to make or break a first impression of your home.

When selecting your staircase style, one of the questions you'll want to think about is do you prefer a Post to Post or Over the Post staircase design?

Post to Post Staircase DesignPost to Post Staircase Design | New Home Staircase Styles | Staircase Trends

In a post to post staircase design, the handrails run between two newel posts.

"Newel posts" are the column that support the balustrades and handrail.

Pictured here are posts with painted wood balusters that blend perfectly with the white trim.

A combination of carpet and hardwood is used to give this foyer contrasting colors and textures.

New Home Staircase Design | Staircase Trends | Popular Staircase Styles

Over the Post Staircase Design

In an over the post staircase design, the handrails run over the newel posts and the balusters are fitted into the handrailing.

Pictured here is a volute over the post system. A "volute" design consists of a spiral at the ends of the handrail

A starting step is required for a volute over the post design.

This staircase incorporates the popular trend of wrought iron balusters with alternating baskets.

This oak and iron style is more formal and traditional than a box newel or craftsman style staircase.

You should love every detail of your new home.

Our Interior Designer will work with you to create the personality you’re looking for, throughout your Stanton Home – as part of your new home package.

New Home Design 2011 | What are Homeowners Willing to Give Up to Stay on Budget?

When the focus is on the Budget, what are the top 5 things Homeowners are Willing to Do Without?

2011 Market Trends: Popular Ways to Stay on Budget

New Home Design 2011 | Staying on Budget 2011 | New Homes Raleigh

Number One Budget Cut: Square Footage

Homeowners are willing to cut back on square footage first, before any other aspect of their new home.

Their focus is turned to the efficient use of space, open floor plans with lots of light, and convenient storage solutions that save space.

A 5th bedroom or an expanded bonus room is losing popularity.

New Home Design 2011 | Staying on Budget 2011 | New Homes Raleigh

Number Two Budget Cut: Finish Details

More and more homeowners are asking themselves, "Do I really want wainscoting in several areas throughout my home, or will it have more emphasis in only one room or hallway?"

Finish details like crown molding, wainscoting, and chair railing can be "do it yourself" weekend projects, rather than part of the initial home construction.

New Home Design 2011 | Staying on Budget 2011 | New Homes Raleigh

Number Three Budget Cut: Architecture/Design Complexity

More homeowners are now leaning towards a 9/12 rather than 12/12 roof pitch, 2 rather than 5 gables, and standard windows rather than upgraded styles.

There are many less complex design styles that still make a home unique and beautiful.

Number Four Budget Cut: LandscapingNew Home Design 2011 | Staying on Budget 2011 | Custom Home Design 2011

More homewoners are seeing the benefit in installing all landscaping on their own, after their new home closing date.

In addition to saving money on labor costs, homeowners take a lot of pride in putting some sweat equity into their new home.

Number Five Budget Cut: Green Products/Design

The green products that are easier for homeowners to give up include bamboo flooring and recycled glass countertops, which are much higher cost per square foot than their popular counterparts: hardwood flooring and granite countertops.

The number of new homeowners opting for Green features that focus on energy savings, cost cutting, and environmental impact reduction is actually INCREASING.

In fact, more homeowners than ever are opting for advanced HVAC heating and cooling systems, superior insulation, and approved (often through ENERGY STAR) appliances designed to conserve water and energy.

No matter what the total budget is, today's homebuyers are focused on making smart decisions that will help their new home not only be an exceptional place to live, but also a wise investment.
