Parrish Womble Park in Holly Springs Offers Soccer, Baseball and More in a Beautiful Setting - Raleigh Relocation Package

Raleigh relocation package - Womble Park in Holly Springs - Parks and Recreation, Fun Things to Do with Kids

The Triangle area of North Carolina is full of parks and recreation areas.

And the little town of Holly Springs, just southwest of Raleigh and Cary, has a wonderful park of it's own.

The Parrish Womble Park, or just "Womble Park" as referred to by the residents, is a beautiful place to spend a lazy afternoon with the kids or the dog.

Raleigh relocation package - Womble Park in Holly Springs - Parks and Recreation, Fun Things to Do with Kids

This 46 acre park was purchased in 1997, and has four lighted baseball/softball fields, along with soccer fields, horseshoe pits, and a volleyball court.

Nearby is a large covered picnic shelter with about a dozen tables - which can be rented out for family events, but most often has plenty of room for picnics and birthday parties.

Throughout the year, this park is a center of activity for the town of Holly Springs.  There are festivals and events held in every season, with local crafts and businesses offering their wares.  Often the big red fire engine is present as well, and kids are welcome to explore the equipment and meet the members of the Holly Springs fire department.

Womble Park is one more reason why Holly Springs and the Raleigh area are a great place to live!

Want to Hike in the Raleigh Area? Spend a Few Hours on the American Tobacco Trail!

The American Tobacco Trail has a bit of a misleading name.  There's no tobacco anywhere to be seen on the trail, and I can't even find a historical reference to tobacco!  The American Tobacco Trail is actually being constructed over a former railroad passage built for the New Hope Railroad in the early part of the 20th century, which has been abandoned since the 1970s.

Since the late 1980's, the Triangle Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (TRTC), a volunteer non-profit organization, has been working to preserve this rail corridor as a beautiful walkway.

Hiking in the Raleigh Area - American Tobacco Trail in Chatham County, Fun Things to Do in Raleigh h

We came to check out the trail, right before spring came bursting out.

Access is easy.  From Apex, take Hwy 64 towards Jordan Lake.  In just a few short miles, you'll see New Hill - Olive Chapel Road.  Take a left, then follow the signs to the park entrance.

Here's a map of the whole trail.

The trail is wide and easily traveled by foot or bike.  There are well-maintained benches and picnic tables scattered about.

Bring your own food and water, but there is a restroom available at this trail entrance.

Hiking in the Raleigh Area - American Tobacco Trail in Chatham County, Fun Things to Do in Raleigh h

The American Tobacco Trail has only been open in portions since 2000.

The Durham City Council, the Triangle Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (TRTC), and Chatham and Wake Counties continue to work to extend the trail to it's full 22 mile length, which stretches from the Southpoint Mall area down past Apex to this trail entrance near the eastern side of Jordan Lake.

Some sections will be paved, others hard packed.  All are well-maintained.

This is a view of Beaver Creek from the bridge 1.2 miles from the entrance.  I can't wait to go back now that everything is green and full!

This trail is a delight any time of year.

If you like to hike, bike, or walk, take some time to explore the American Tobacco Trail.  No matter where you live in the Triangle, it's not far - and there are access points in several locations.

Raleigh Area Parks - Fred G Bond Metro Park in Cary, NC - What a Terrific Park!

Raleigh Area Parks - Fred G Bond Metro Park in Cary, NC

If you're relocating to the Raleigh area, you may be wondering what kinds of parks are in beautiful North Carolina.  Raleigh has quite a reputation for the number and size of parks, and the Fred G Bond Metro Park is just one example.

Raleigh Relocation Package - Fred G Bond Metro Park

Where is the park?

Fred G Bond Metro Park is located right in the center of Cary, NC.

It's easily accessible from Cary, Raleigh, Apex, Holly Springs, and Morrisville, but it draws people from all over the Triangle area.

See the map below - it's right off High House Road.

Raleigh Relocation Package - Fred G Bond Metro ParkAre there many walking paths?

The Fred G Bond Park is one of my favorite places to walk, and almost any time of day you'll see mothers pushing strollers and joggers enjoying the sun.

This park covers 310 acres, and is one of the largest in the area.

Click through for this map of trails - there are enough options to give you a different course every day of the week, for at least a couple of weeks!

The Oxford Hunt Trail is well paved and shaded, with views of the lake.

Are there places to go fishing and boating?

There's a 42 acre lake, and fishing and boating is allowed.

We've rented a pedal boat during the summer, and had fun trying to make our way across the lake.  It's large enough to tire the pedalers, and worth the rental!

Boat rentals are available April through October.

Canoes and kayaks rent for $4 per hour, and pedal boats rent for $5 per half hour.

Are there places to play sports?

The Fred G Bond Park in Cary has plenty of places to play ball.  There are seven different ball fields, with facilities for soccer and baseball.  These fields are pretty popular all year, except during "turf renovation" November thru February.

If you'd like to reserve a field for your team, call the Athletics Division at (919) 469-4062.

For official sports team usage, fees range from $10-40 per hour.

Raleigh Relocation Package - Parks and Recreation - PlaygroundsWhat about the younger kids?

Wherever you look at the Fred G Bond park in Cary, you'll see kids running around and having fun.  But their favorite place is definitely the Lazy Daze Playround.

This playground has it all: two full sets of swings, a huge sandbox with "construction equipment", two large playgrounds with plenty of slides, and even the little "horse" rides on springs.

Grandparents and parents enjoy the shady benches around the perimeter, and there's plenty of picnic tables.  So bring some sandwiches and lemonade, and enjoy!

Raleigh Relocation Package - Cary Parks and RecreationAre there any special events?

The Fred G Bond Park in Cary is a beautiful park.  The roads and paths are surrounded by green, even before the spring leaves has started budding.

It's a very popular place for a wide variety of events.

One of the best events is the Spring Daze Arts & Crafts Festival - Saturday April 26.

There are dozens upon dozens of stands featuring crafts, music, and food.  There's live entertainment up and down the winding roads and paths.   You may want to arrive early - most parking is across the street at a variety of nearby churches, who offer the use of their parking lots for the event.
