New Tanger Outlet Mall Coming to Raleigh Area

80 Upscale Outlet Stores Included in New Mebane Outlet Mall

Ground broke yesterday on a huge new outlet mall just west of Hillsborough/Chapel Hill, in Mebane NC. 

The Tanger Outlet Mall will have 317,000 square foot, and will feature 80 upscale outlet stores including Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5th, Banana Republic Factory Store, Coach Factory, Gap Outlet, J. Crew, Michael Kors, Nike Factory Store and Tommy Hilfiger.

This outlet mall is going to create an anticipated 300 construction jobs and 800 permanent jobs.  Like most Tanger outlet centers, the Mebane location will feature a "Main Street" approach with lots of storefronts and sidewalks.

This is the third Tanger Outlet Center to be available in North Carolina.  One is in Blowing Rock near the Blue Ridge Parkway in mountainous western North Carolina, and the other is in Nags Head, on the North Carolina Outer Banks. 

Mebane is about 30 minutes west of Raleigh.  There is a Carolina Premium Outlets in Smithfield NC which is about 30 minutes east of Raleigh.

The Shoppes at Holly Springs - Walmart Supercenter Shopping Center

The Shoppes at Holly Springs opened recently to applause from local Holly Springs residents.

The Shoppes at Holly Springs has a great location on the Hwy 55 Bypass, less than 1 mile from Downtown Holly Springs and 4 miles from Fuquay-Varina.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Walmart Supercenter at the Shoppes at Holly Springs is the closest Supercenter to Apex, Pittsboro, and Cary, NC.

In several visits, the store has always been neat, clean, and well-presented, with a great produce department.

The remainder of the shops have filled up quickly, with only three vacancies still available.

The Shoe Dept offers "discount" shoes in a wide variety of styles.  With over 1114 locations in 36 states, the Shoe Dept has a reputation for value. 919-557-6329. 

The World Super Buffet offers Asian cuisine, and has gotten good reviews for their sushi.  919-552-8188.

 

The Little Gym features gymnastics, dance, cheerleading, and karate classes, as well as camp, birthday parties, and "parent survival nights".  919-567-2018.

Also present is an Urgent Care center, a Game Stop, Alltel Wireless, and the Absolute Skate Shop.

 

 

 

 

 

On the other end, the Qwik Pack & Ship will take care of those urgent packages or bulky birthday presents.

Michaelangelo's Pizza is a family-owned and operated company with 4 locations in the Triangle. Try the Cherry Pie Pizza for dessert!  Great deals here... 919-557-4992.

I have to admit - my 4 year old was most excited about the first McDonald's to arrive in Holly Springs, NC! 

The indoor playground is very nice, and the double drivethrough is a good idea for busy evenings - though I've never noticed it in use!

Maybe now that they're out of Batman toys, I won't have to talk him out of McDonald's quite as often.... 

 

 

 

Another plus for Holly Springs, NC residents - the first gas station to be built along 55 Bypass between Apex and Fuquay-Varina.  

They've been hard at work on this one, so I'm sure it's due to open soon! 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Shoppes at Holly Springs is just one sign of growth - two other new centers are planned for opening within the next 6-12 months.   Holly Springs, NC has a lot to offer, as does neighboring Fuquay-Varina, NC and Apex, NC.

The Junior League of Raleigh (JLR), a volunteer program, presents "A Shopping Spree", an event they have been doing since 1984 to raise money to support programs and projects that help better communities.

With more than 130 vendors, including 40 new vendors, from around the nation and products including but not limited to jewelry, home décor, clothing, shoes and art there is sure to be something for everyone. And, with the holidays coming up just around the corner, not only can you help support your community, but you can get some of that dreaded holiday shopping out of the way!

Starting October 2^nd, with a preview day on the 1^st, this event is only $10 for ages 6 and up, with admittance to all four days of the show.  Located at the Raleigh Convention Center, there is plenty of parking nearby.

October 1^st-4^th, there are special events each day with a slightly higher entrance fee.

Starting with "Twas the Night Before SPREE!, the Preview Gale is Oct 1^st from 7-11pm. It includes private shopping, cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, and dancing. The cost is $50 and includes beer, wine, a silent auction and a Bailey's raffle ticket. If you plan to attend the preview, please dress in cocktail attire.

October 2's Early Morning Shopping starts off at 8:30-11am with breakfast and includes shopping without worrying about crowds and being bumped into with all those baby strollers. The cost is $25 which includes admission to the rest of the event days.

October 3 is the Blues, Brews and Bar-B-Q event. New to the event this year, running from 6-10pm it includes a barbecue dinner, beer and a live auction. The cost is $35 each.

October 4 is your Weekend Wake-Up and runs from 8:30-10:30am and includes a SPREE! mug with hot coffee and more stroller-free shopping. The cost for this special event is $15.

The regular public hours that are included in the $10 admission ticket are as follows:

October 2 - 11am-8pm

October 3 - 9:30am-5pm

October 4 - 10:30am-6pm

October 5 - 11am-5pm

Also, from 10am-5pm each day there is an Author's Corner, where you can browse books with a southern-twist including non-fiction, fiction, kid's books, cookbooks and more. If you make a purchase, you just might be able to have it signed at the author meet and greet!

Haddon Hall Commons Shopping Center

Shopping and Dining in Apex, NC

Haddon Hall Commons is just one more example of why Apex, NC was ranked the #14 smaller city in the nation as a "Best Place to Live". 

Haddon Hall Commons is anchored by a large grocery store, Harris Teeter, and offers a variety of small shops and dining options.

The entrance sets the tone - it's well-landscaped, with a pillar and brick theme.  Like much of the shopping surrounding it, this shopping center is less than 5 years old. 

 

 

Haddon Hall Commons is just east of the Hwy 55/Hwy 64 interchange, making this a popular place to stop on the way home from work, or a great place to dine for Apex, Cary, and Holly Springs residents. 

The circular fountain with surrounding stone and brick benches is a popular spot in the evenings.

Cinelli's Restaurant is a pizzeria with a strong Italian and seafood theme.  Try one of the calzones, or a Mussles Bianco appetizer.  Plenty of great pasta dishes too! 919-362-0064

 

 

 

 

 

Want something for breakfast on the way to work?  Stop by Bruegger's Bagels, and pick up a couple of dozen bagels with assorted cream cheeses!  The honey walnut cream cheese is divine, but you'll probably want to sample the dozen or more flavors.  Or grab a sandwich for lunch - a bagel sandwich!  Plenty of other options too.  919-367-7720.

Harris Teeter anchors Haddon Hall Commons.  Harris Teeter is one of the most popular grocery chains in the Raleigh area, and seems to be opening a new store every time I turn around! 

Harris Teeter is headquartered in Mathews, NC and offers a full service supermarket.  I'm always impressed by the produce department, deli, and seafood.  And they do offer triple coupons at least every few months! 919-362-3782

 

 

 

Haddon Hall Commons is centrally located, and within walking distance of some great communities.  But because it has a prime location on Hwy 55 between Hwy 64 and Hwy 1, Haddon Hall Commons will continue to be a top shopping center for local residents!

The Animation & Fine Art Galleries may not look extravagant from the outside.

But inside is one of the area's largest collections of original Picasso, Mattise, and more. 

Animation & Fine Art Galleries sells only original artwork.  Bring your checkbook - and you can bring home an original rendition of Cows, 1966 by Andy Warhol - for only $82,500.  Or use the studio's layaway program to purchase the piece interest free with 10 equal payments.

 

 

 

 

 

Wander the showroom, and you'll find plenty to catch your eye. 

Sculptures and paintings are carefully displayed - Miro, Masson, Chagall, Dali, and much more.

It's no wonder Apex, NC was ranked the #14 smaller city in the nation as a "Best Place to Live".  The shopping alone is terrific!

Peakway Market Square is a smaller shopping center just across the street from Beaver Creek.

The builder won an award for the unique use of curves and multiple brick colors.

 

 

 

 

 

Most shops here are smaller, but there's plenty of variety - and it's easy to take care of little errands before grabbing groceries or hardware across the street.

Raleigh Recreation - Shopping! 

There are plenty of shopping opportunities in the Raleigh/Triangle area.  But a outlet shopping is certainly a favorite - and a fun way to find some great bargains, all in one place.

If you're looking for housewares, shoes, clothes for him, her or the baby, lotions and bubbles, books, sunglasses, perfume, or simply a fun place to hang out for the afternoon with a couple of friends, the Carolina Premium Outlets in Smithfield, NC are worth a visit.

The Carolina Premium Outlets at Smithfield, NC are 30 miles from Raleigh, and is the nearest LARGE outlet mall to the Triangle. 

 

 

 

 

 

Those clearance signs are pretty enticing, but if you've ever been to an outlet mall, you know that the discounted products represent just a small part of everything that's available!

This Raleigh area outlet mall has about 80 shops, and rarely is there a vacancy - always a good sign! 

 

 

 

 

 

 

This Raleigh area outlet mall is an outdoor center, with shops wrapping around several large, clean parking lots.  (Click here for map)

Even on a rainy weekday afternoon, there's plenty of activity - though definitely quieter than on a nice weekend!

Here's a secret for super-shoppers: there's a handy list of specials and upcoming events, so you can plan your shopping trip ahead of time. 

 

 

 

 

 

Some of the more popular shops include Banana Republic, Brooks Brothers, DressBarn, Polo Ralph Lauren, Carters, and much more. 

The Carolina Premium Outlet mall is one of the more upscale outlet malls I've been to, with plenty of bargains to be found. 

Looking for decorative items for your home?  Check out Carolina Pottery - an absolutely huge home decor store. 

Carolina Pottery has indoor and outdoor furniture, home decor items, mirrors, tons of silk flowers and plants, huge outdoor pots, and much more.  The building feels like a Costco inside - it's very large and open with a warehouse feel to it.  Oh, yeah, and Carolina Pottery always has lots of things to choose from in the big bargain displays up front!

 

Rain or sun, the Carolina Premium Outlets are worth a visit.  The walkways are well covered, and for an outdoor mall, exposure to weather is very limited.

If you're hungry, there are plenty of nearby restaraunts. But the only food vendor within the outlet mall itself is Dairy Queen - though who can turn down a banana split or a Blizzard?   There are also drink vending machines.

Best Place for Furniture Shopping in Raleigh, NC

Furniture Row - Lots of Choices, All On One Street

If you're moving to the Raleigh area or within the Triangle, chances are you'll need some new furniture.  

Many moves are to a larger home.  Maybe you now need furniture for a keeping room or living room, where your previous home just had a family room.   Or you're moving out of an apartment and into your first home - congratulations! 

On the other hand, accidents sometimes happen during a move.  When my husband and I moved to Raleigh, our nice dining room table actually collapsed from the weight of the furniture that had been loaded on top of it.  Sometimes moving is a good time to get rid of a 10 year old couch.  Maybe you donated some things to your nephew who's just starting out... 

There's a great place to go furniture shopping in Raleigh.

Just head down to Furniture Row!

Hwy 70, or Glenwood Avenue, between Hwy 1 and Hwy 540 is actually more like a city street, with stoplights and abundant shopping and dining.   We call it "Furniture Row" because there are many, many furniture stores in this 6 mile stretch.

One of my favorites is Rooms to Go.

They like to sell a full room at a discounted price.  It's easy to find coordinated sets, and the prices are very reasonable.

 

 

I've included a handy map below of many different furniture stores on Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh, which also includes addresses and phone numbers for each business.

There are choices for every budget.

Ethan Allen has a beautiful showroom, and designers on staff ready to help.

Bassett Furniture Direct like many furniture stores, you can browse their offerings online as well.

Home Comfort Furniture is locally owned and operated since 1985, with 4 locations including one on Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh. 

 

 

 

The Oak Store is right next to Rooms to Go, and also has lots of leather furniture.

Haverty's Furniture - You may want to browse the online specials before going here.  Right now, you can have no down payment, no interest for 24 months.

Restoration Hardware - Right near the Crabtree Valley Mall at the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and Hwy 1, their collections include more unusual lines, like their selections of British Cane. 

Kincaid Furniture Company - mainly solid wood furniture, they take pride in lack of veneer.  Also have Laura Ashley collections. 

 

 

Expressions Furniture - if you're looking for a full-service interior designer, stop by.  Expressions was created by a local interior designer.  Website shows examples of some recent projects.

Lazy Boy Furniture Gallery - it's not just easy chairs, they also have sofas, ottomans, love seats, and sectionals.

Ecko International - some items in stock.

Wicker Gallery - wicker furniture for indoors and outdoors.  Local company, just two locations.

 

 

 

 

The Room Store - similar to Rooms to Go.  Lots of great room combinations, better deals if you buy the room.  Sign up for discount programs.  One of my favorites.

There are close to two dozen different furniture stores up and down Glenwood Avenue.  If you're looking for furniture in Raleigh, plan to spend at least an afternoon on this 6 mile stretch.  It's a little long for walking, but almost every store is right next to at least one other, so you'll be able to limit the number of stops.

And while you're there, grab a hamburger at Fat Daddy's, one of the best local, unique places to eat!

Chatham Downs - Groceries, Coffee, Banking and More - on the Southern Tip of Chapel Hill

When considering an area to relocate to, the availability of nearby shopping can be a top deciding factor.  Chatham Downs, a beautiful shopping center on Interstate 15/501, is easily accessible by residents of Fearrington Village, Pittsboro, Silk Hope, Chapel Ridge Golf Club, and popular areas around Jordan Lake.   It's just one of many options available to Chatham County, Carrboro, and Chapel Hill residents.  It is the first larger shopping center heading towards Chapel Hill on 15/501 from Jordan Lake/Pittsboro. 

The anchors in the Chatham Downs shopping center are Harris Teeter and Ace Hardware.

Harris Teeter is a popular Raleigh/Triangle grocery store.  There are new stores popping up all the time, with about 170 stores across 6 states right now.

Harris Teeter has a great produce department, usually with a large organic section.  When I'm looking for zuchinni off season, this is usually one of the few places I can find it. 

They also have extensive seafood and meat departments in most stores.  In some stores, there's even stuffed clams and other specialties in the glassed-in meat case, ready to take home and bake.

Harris Teeter is a North Carolina company, headquarted in Matthew, NC.

If you've got kids attending a local school, sign up for the Together in Education program.  Everytime you shop and your Harris Teeter card is scanned, a portion of your purchase is earmarked for the school you've personally signed up to support.

If you need a pick-me-up on the way to work in Chapel Hill, or some extra caffeine on your way to class at UNC Chapel Hill, stop by Starbucks. 

The new Skinny Cinnamon Dolce Latte is pretty tasty, and only 90 calories, though I have to admit my favorite Starbucks treat is the frozen Caramel Frappachino.

There are about 10 Starbucks in the Chapel Hill area, including locations inside SuperTarget, Harris Teeter, and Southpoint Mall.

Curves at Chatham Downs is a convenient place to work out for local women.  A fitness franchise, there are more than 10,000 Curves locations worldwide.  Curves touts 30 minutes, 3 times a week, as a complete exercise program.  Everything is set up especially for women, and there are partner diet and nutrition programs.
