Fun Things to Do This Fall - Pumpkin Picking and Corn Mazes

Hours: Monday - Saturday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m; Sunday 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Ganyard Hill Farm is open daily from September 30th through October 31st.

Pick your pumpkin straight from pumpkin patch, or choose from those already picked and stacked at the barn store.  Your pumpkin is FREE with admission to the farm! 

Activities include a 5-acre corn maze, at 6-7 feet tall, and "tiny tots" Sorghum corn crop mazes for the kids. 

Guests are invited to pick an ear of corn to feed the barnyard animals at the end of the maze, using an old-fashioned sheller to take off the kernels to hand feed the goats, chickens, and other animals. 

You can pick cotton, and take some home, too.

Don't forget the hay maze, hay mountain, and hay ride! 

Bring your own picnic lunch to the picnic area, or enjoy a hot dog from the hot dog cart for lunch or a snack.

The Triangle MLS Report for Durham County for August 2011 has been released, and shows a significant increase in closings in 2011 versus 2010.

August 2010 - 212 Closed Sales in Durham County

August 2011 - 272 Closed Sales in Durham County

28.3% Increase in Closed Sales in Durham County

Not only that, but new listings are down significantly, which means there are fewer choices to select from.

Fireworks are scheduled at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park in association with games on July 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.

This chart shows the 2010/2011 Durham County property tax rates.  If you are relocating to a home inside a town, the tax rate will be slightly higher.  If your new home will be outside of town boundaries, the tax rate can be extremely low.

OK - But What Will I Actually Pay in Durham Property Taxes?

What do all those little numbers mean?  It's actually not as hard as it looks.

1. Take the assessed value of the property.
2. Divide by 100.
3. Multiply by the tax rate.

This will give you the yearly tax amount, per 2010/2011 rates.

As you can see, a City of Durham location will be the most expensive property tax location to live in Durham County, following closely by the City of Chapel Hill.

How Do I Find Out the Assessed Value of My Durham County Home?

If there's a particular home that you're considering, you can go directly to the Durham County Tax Administration Records site, type in the address, and see the assessed value of the property.  

What if the Assessed Value is Different From the Sales Price?

If there is a discrepancy between the assessed value and the asking price of the home or lot, don't be afraid to ask your real estate agent to pull comps for you.  Assessed values are not always aligned well with market values, as assessments are often made several years apart.  All North Carolina counties are required to conduct a revaluation at least once every eight years. Durham County was reassessed on January 1, 2008, and the new assessed values went into affect in Summer 2008.

Pick Your Own Pumpkins at Ganyard Hill Farm!

If you're looking for a beautiful, natural pick your own pumpkin farm near Raleigh, Ganyard Hill Farm in Durham is well worth a visit.

It was an absolutely gorgeous, warm day - the kind you can only find in North Carolina in October!

Ganyard Hill Farm is one of the few local pick your own pumpkin farms that is open 7 days a week.

This pumpkin farm is open Mon - Sat 9:00 am to 6:00 pm and Sun 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.

After entering through the little store, paying admission, (and saying hello to the bunny and chicks inside), the kids ran right to the giant slide. 

Climb up the bales of hay, then take a fast but safe ride down the 24" pipe, and run around to do it again!  They loved climbing that huge hill of hay too.

The "Corn Crib" is a huge barn with cows and bunnies to say hello to - and a huge POOL of corn kernels for the kids to swim and play in!

There's a lot more to do at Ganyard Hill Farm then just finding where to pick your own pumpkin.

The Corn Crib was very popular, and big enough for 15-20 kids to easily play at one time. 

The corn is over a foot deep, so we made corn angels and buried the kids in corn!

Ganyard Hill Farm offers field trips, fun activities, and lots of educational opportunities. 

Straight ahead are the goats and pigs, that can be hand fed with freshly shucked corn.

To the right, kids can visit the cotton fields and soybean crops.

If you've never seen cotton growing up close, you'll find it fascinating. 

Fresh cotton looks just as white and fluffy as those bags of "fluff" or cotton balls.  Each big cotton blossom is divided into four sections of "fluff".

The kids will love the cotton field at Ganyard Hill Farm!

What better way to enjoy a beautiful fall day in the Raleigh area than with a hay ride at a pumpkin farm!

Ganyard Hill Farm has four huge hayride trailers, pulled by hard-working farm tractors.

You'll take a full, 15 minute or so tour of Ganyard Hill Farm before coming back near the Pumpkin Patch.

Ganyard Hill Farm has one of the largest pick your own pumpkin fields that I've seen in the area.

The pumpkins are big and ready to take home!

Admission to Ganyard Hill Farm is $12.50 for ages 2 and up, which includes a pumpkin.

Plan to spend 2-4 hours at Ganyard Hill Farm, or bring a picnic lunch and enjoy it at the picnic grounds.

For school trips, teachers get in free and admission is $10 per person.  Ganyard Hill Farm is deservedly a popular field trip destination!
