What are the top 3 most requested window grid styles in North Carolina new homes? Prairie, colonial, and craftsman.

Names for Window Grids | Types of Window Grids in Raleigh New Homes

See how window grid style can add personality to any new custom home - here the three most popular window grid styles in 2012 new homes.

Window grids come in a variety of materials, such as vinyl, aluminum and fiberglass

Grids can be placed:

- inside of the window panes (interior of the home)

- outside of the window panes (exterior of the home)

- between the window panes

- a combination of locations

While built-in grids can make window washing a snap, many windows also have a "clip-on" grid option for easy removal/replacement when cleaning.

Prairie Style Windows

What is a prairie style window grid?

A prairie style window is divided into 9 different panes - four small square corner panes, four long rectangle edge panes, and one large center square pane.

The custom home pictured to the left, a version of the Bakersfield, uses prairie style window grids in the upper windows.

The contemporary (grid-less) lower window add a more up-to-date feel to the home.

Prairie style window grids can help create a sense of a larger living space - with less obstructed light shining through.

Colonial Style Windows Names for Window Grids | Types of Window Grids in Raleigh New Homes

What is a colonial style window grid?

A colonial style window grid divides the window into an equal number of panes - and can commonly be seen in sets of 9, 6, or 4.

Colonial style windows give any home a classic look - and are among the most common for 2012 new homes.

The custom home pictured to the left, a version of the Beaufort, combines "standard" colonial windows with colonial arch windows - placed above for architectural emphasis.

Each aspect of this custom exterior was carefully chosen for its quality and eye-catching appeal, from hardi, stone, and shake exterior siding to arched keystone header accents.

Craftsman Style Window Grids

Names for Window Grids | Types of Window Grids in Raleigh New Homes

What is a craftsman style window?

Craftsman windows are usually divided into 2 panes and are horizontally rectangular more often than in typical architecture.

Names for Window Grids | Types of Window Grids in Raleigh New Homes

In the custom home pictured to the right, a version of the Brogan, the upper windows use a single grid divider and the lower windows are left open as single panes.

Several horizontal accent windows on the sides and rear of this home are grid-less.

Craftsman window grids can compliment other architectural elements, such as the front porch style with stone base and tapered columns.

Specialty Window Grid Styles

There are many types of specialty window grids - such as diamond, double prairie, England, traditional, cathedral, and victorian.

How much electricity does an average American home use? | NC energy costs

How much electricity does an average American home use?

What affects the cost of energy in North Carolina?

According to the Energy Information Administration of the U.S. Department of Energy:

How much electricity does an average American home use? | NC energy costs

In 2010, the average annual electricity consumption for a U.S. residential utility customer was 11,496 kWh, an average of 958 kilowatthours (kWh) per month.

What does that mean, in practical terms?

North Carolina residents had an average monthly bill of $125.20, based on the 2010 census data and calculated as of November 2011. Read these facts on the EIA website, here.

For many homes, this may not factor in the cost of heating the home, as gas or propane run furnaces have been common for many years.

This also averages the cost for small apartments and large homes together, so may not be a full picture of the cost for a typical single family home.

What affects the cost of energy in a North Carolina home?

How much electricity does an average American home use? | NC energy costs

 - The home's energy efficiency:

 - efficient heating/cooling equipment

 - tight construction/ducts (and type of insulation)

 - high-performance windows

 - type of water heater, etc

 - The home's green certification: new homes certified by programs like ENERGY STAR have guarenteed lower energy costs.

  - The size of a home: more square footage = more space to heat, cool, and seal.

  - The price of oil: oil prices not only affect the cost of heating your home if you have a gas furnace, but it also affects the cost of generating electricity.

  - State or Federal tax credits and other incentive programs.

  - Energy provider costs: Duke Energy and Progress Energy are two of the largest energy providers in North Carolina.

How can I save money on electricity in my new NC home?

Consider homes with energy saving measures like:

- Better construction practices (even a home that's 5 years old has been built to a much lower energy code than today's new homes, but overall efficiency still depends on the expertise of the home builder)

- Tankless or solar water heaters

- Spray foam insulation

- Superior Wall insulated wall panels in basements

- Energy Star rated lighting, light bulbs, and appliances

- Sealed Crawlspace

and many other ideas.

Master Bedrooms with a Sitting Room | Best Master Bedroom Layouts

Why include a sitting area?

 - Master bedroom sitting areas add visual appeal to the exterior of a home, especially when designed as a turret.

 -  You can include more windows in your master bedroom - giving more natural light, and opening up views to the outdoors.

-  Master bedroom sitting areas offer completely private space for quiet time, alone or together

 Master bedroom sitting room ideas:

 - Add a small chair, table, and lamp to create a reading, studying, or creative arts area.

 - Add a couch to create a comfortable lounging area.

 - Not concerned about integrating sleeping space with active space? Considering converting the sitting area into a small workout space - perfect for a treadmill or elliptical machine.

 - Create a entertainment area - with built-in TV cables.

 - Include built-in bookshelves.

 - Add a desk (if you like having a "work" space in your bedroom!).

How large is a sitting room?

Depending on your personal tastes, a master bedroom sitting room can be designed as a small nook, or an entire attached room.

The master bedroom pictured to the right contains a small turret sitting room.

Does a sitting room need to be on the first floor?

A sitting room can be included in a first or second floor master suite.

The master suite pictured to the left is on the second story - giving the sitting area an impressive view of the golf course this home is located on.

Raleigh in Top Ten Fastest Growing Cities in the United States

Raleigh-Cary has been named the fourth fastest growing metropolitan area in the nation, from the 2000 census to the 2010 census.

The 2010 U.S. Census results showed an over 40% population increase in the Raleigh-Cary metropolitan area, now reaching a population of 1,130,490.

Other metropolitan areas making the top ten fastest-growing list included: Palm Coast, FL; St. George, UT; Las Vegas-Paradise, NV; Provo-Orem, UT.

Raleigh-Cary's population growth strongly correlates to the projected 90% increase in 2011 Raleigh building permits.

The North Carolina census, released by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2011, detailed these results:

Raleigh in Top Ten Fastest Growing Cities in the United States

Below is just one example, The "Carwile."

The Carwiles came to Stanton Homes with a traditional-style floor plan.

They loved the romance of a traditionally styled home and desired to build a classic white house with a front porch and black shutters.

They also had some modern thinking in mind that led to some savvy improvements on the livability of the original floorplan

Interior Designer Hand Rendering: The "Carwile" Master Bathroom

NC Custom Home Design | How to Design Your Master Bathroom

Top on the Carwile's wish list were master bath layout modifications.

Stanton Homes did not increase the overall square footage of the home.

Instead, we created more floor place and visual appeal.

Pictured to the left is a hand rendering drawn by the Stanton Homes interior design team.

In the proposed layout, the double vanity became longer and a center open shelving unit was added.

Completed Custom Home: The "Carwile" Master Bathroom

This new vanity maximizes the "his and her" style.

The open shelves are designed for hand towels and toiletries.

Larger bath towels will fit into the 24" wide stack of drawers located below the open shelves.

As if that weren't enough storage, his and hers vanity areas also include separate drawers for housing personal items - a complete and efficient set up.

The tub was moved from the front of the home to the side, with a cantilever design (an alcove with no foundation underneath).

The water closet was moved to the front of the house and incorporated the front window.

Simply closing the door to the water closet gives the bathroom complete privacy from the front yard, without having to keep window coverings permanently closed.

NC Custom Home Design | How to Design Your Master Bathroom

Adding to the charm is that the bathroom was decorated in a classic hotel-look with the timeless contrast of white subway tile and white Carrara marble accents.

The dark stained raised panel cabinets provide an appealing contrast.

Traditional pale blue walls complete the somewhat vintage look.

Just add inexpensive Bamboo blinds and stacks of fresh white towels.

With the help of free interior design services at Stanton Homes, you will have a master bathroom that never goes out of style

Most Popular Master Bathroom Finishes

What are the most popular master bathroom finishes? Two of our homebuyer favorites are brushed nickel and oil rubbed bronze.

Browse the new home master bathroom photos below, to see what features and finishes NC homebuyers are choosing in 2012.

Brushed and Satin Nickel Finishes

From country farmhouse to modern sleek, brushed nickel fixtures can add class to your master bathroom.

The two custom homes pictured here (the Carwile and the Worthington) suit different personalities, with the same classic look and feel of brushed and satin nickel.

 - Rounded and angled features versus squared and straight features (including towel ring, faucets and cabinet pulls)

Oil Rubbed Bronze Finishes

The oil rubbed bronze finish style was introduced into the marketplace to compliment Old World styles (French Country, English County) that were designed to look antique in nature.  Oil rubbed bronze bathroom finishes first became popular starting in the 1990's.

The two custom homes pictured here (the Beaufort and the Brogan) use oil rubbed bronze fixtures to create an updated-antique feeling.

The oil rubbed bronze fixtures can be juxtaposed against lighter tans and white to "pop," or they can blend in more to emphsize the dark tones in a tile.

White Subway Tile Backsplashes

What kitchen design trends will be most popular in 2012 custom homes? One of the most requested kitchen design features at Stanton Homes is a white subway tile backsplash.

Take a look at the beautiful NC custom home kitchen pictures below, and see why.

3x6 Glazed White Subway Tiles

A classic 3 x 6 glazed white subway tile, along with white cabinetry, has withstood the test of time.

White subway tile backsplashes are popular due to an ability to transcend style from cottage charm to traditional elegance to modern simplicity.

The NC custom home pictured to the right (The Carwile) is an "All American" country-craftsman style home. The white subway tile backsplash brightens up the kitchen, and complements the farmhouse style sink for a sleek yet simple appeal.

Brick Patterns Visually Expand Space

Any time a brick pattern is used in a back splash area it visually expands the space - perfect for smaller alley kitchens or large kitchens open to the great or living room.

The NC custom home pictured to the left is a kitchen in a one-story floor plan, the Bethesda. This kitchen is an alley style, with an arched opening to the dining and great room.

The light oak cabinetry helps keep the efficiently laid-out room open, bright, and welcoming.

As an added bonus, the 3x6 white subway tile is readily available and inexpensively priced.

White Subway Tile Coordinates with Multiple Countertop Styles

The NC custom home pictured to the right also features white cabinetry paired with white subway tile, for a trendy yet tasteful combination.

There is a custom inlay above the gas range, to draw out the dark tones of the granite countertops and black details in the stainless steel appliances.
