Barrel Vault Ceiling Features
What is a Barrel Vault, and How Can It Accent Your Home?

If you're looking for a unique feature that will add "WOW" to your new home, you'll love a Barrel Vault ceiling.
Barrel vault ceilings can be incorporated into many different styles of homes, without wasting space.
This two story foyer features a multi-level barrel vault ceiling, accented by a wrought iron overlook, fully trimmed plant shelf, and a matching arched window.
Barrel vault ceilings aren't limited to luxury homes. Homes in the mid $200s can include features like these.

Unique Pass Throughs
In this home, the foyer connects to the large family room through a very short hallway underneath the dual staircase.
The curved barrel vault ceiling draws the eye, along with other details like the inset art area.
The contrasting decorator paint adds to the effect, lifting the ceiling while pulling the eyes upward.
Barrel Vaulted Hallways
An ordinary hallway is transformed to the extraordinary by this barrel vaulted ceiling.
The vault has been carried through approximately 12 feet of hallway length, adding a distinctive look and feel to a formerly somewhat boring passage.
Historically, barrel vaults have been found in long hallways in decadent buildings, like the Marwar Hall in the Umaid Bhawan Palace. The Cloisters in New York City is another exemplary example of a barrel vault hallway.

One Story Homes Can Stand Out Too
Even a one story home can offer an incomparable entrance.
This barrel vaulted foyer has been carefully accented with individually placed knotty pine wainscotting, set on the horizontal.

Intellectually Refined Barrel Vault
This short hallway has been set apart with both a barrel vaulted ceiling and a carefully designed built in bookcase.
A barrel vault can also be known as a tunnel vault or a wagon vault.
The technical definition of a barrel vault is "an architectural element formed by the extrusion of a single curve (or pair of curves, in the case of a pointed barrel vault) along a given distance. The curves are typically circular in shape, lending a semi-cylindrical appearance to the total design."
Layers of Arches Add Exceptional Grace
Add incomparable beauty to any home with a barrel vault ceiling.
A well qualified builder or architect can help you incorporate features like these into your next home.

Looks very nice. I've seen the same treatment in this area. It will work as long as they don't overdo it and trivialize it.
Frank Lloyd Wright made some good use of Barrel Vaulted Ceilings too. They can add just the right panache to a home.
I would never have thought to barrel vault a hallway, but the effect is nice and lessens claustrophobia. I like your term "Intellectually Refined Barrel Vault": only the most studious books to be placed here. Thanks for sharing these nice ideas.
Great treatments for homes. The right modifications in design can create a lot of architectural interest in a home. I love the Barrel Vault with the pine.
Lenn - In the Raleigh area, we're one of just a handful of builders with the skills and expertise to design these types of features and offer them in affordable price points. I don't think they'll be overdone, and they are certainly a focal point in any home.
Alan - We're happy to follow in Lloyd's footsteps!
Sara - Glad you found this helpful! The point is certainly that a barrel vault can be incorporated in many different styles, shapes and sizes - and we're happy to help recommend the best use for your lifestyle.
I'm embarrassed to say..I've never heard of barrel vaulted ceilings..you truly do learn something everyday..
Penny, Thanks for sharing your fantastic photos, I don't see Vaulted hallways here in N.W. Ohio but I sure do like them! Karol
Daniel - the look with the pine is one of my favorites too!
Konnie - I hadn't heard of them either, before spending time with Stanton Homes :) - and now I love them.
Karol - Maybe you can be the first to ask for one and start a trend in Ohio! It does take a talented builder to get these right, though.
Penny , beautiful Pictures & Details of your Barrel Vaults ! I especially like your use of different colors , materials & depths ! An elegant look at affordable prices ! Keepin' it Green !
Ed - Thanks, we take a lot of pride in everything we do, and are especially pleased to be able to offer these kinds of features.
GOOD MORNING PENNY! This is really nice! Tucson designs are a little different and some have arch entries but I haven't seen it quite like this! --Gabrielle
