Alternative Movie Theaters - 365 Things to Do in Raleigh
Well, it's about that time again. Summer movie season. Big blockbusters are coming up, and the overpriced popcorn is calling your name.
But what if you want something a bit different? Not in the mood for a big-budget-explosiontastic action movie or another formulaic chick flick? Then how about something a bit out of the ordinary? Hint: subtitles might be involved.
It turns out there are several options in Raleigh for you to see indepentent, foreign, or documentary movies you wouldn't have ever heard of before.
Rialto Theatre - located on Glenwood Ave, the Rialto is a classic. Built in 1942, the Rialto shows exclusively foreign and independent films on its one large screen. Unique to the area, the Rialto also holds a showing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show every Friday at midnight. The Rialto is also available to rent for special occassions and performances. Visit the official website here!
Colony Theater - the Colony has the same owners as the Rialto, but offers a completely different feel. The Colony is located on Six Forks Road. While still showing mainly foreign and independent films, the Colony has more of a quiet, cozy feel. The Colony and Rialto also never show the same films at the same time. Visit the official website here!
(And by the way, the Rialto and Colony both serve alcoholic beverages.)
Wachovia IMAX Theater - on the other end of the scale from those small theaters is the IMAX, located in downtown Raleigh attached to Marbles Kids Museum. Here are all the 3D films and tons of documentaries, shown in astounding IMAX quality. To really notice the difference between IMAX and a regular theater, see the same movie twice, once in each. Oh yeah. Visit the official website here!
Galaxy Cinema - OK, so it's technically not in Raleigh (it's in Cary not far from Highway 64), but the Galaxy more than deserves to be listed here. It is, simply put, awesome. The Galaxy shows basically anything. From independent films, foreign films, classics, documentaries, and even operas, the Galaxy always has something different. Visit the official website here!
