Millions of Americans - Millions of Stories
Tell your story -- no story or sacrifice too small.......
In 1973 a tragic fire destroyed millions of service records of our service men and women.
You may have the only existing record of their service included with your records, travel orders, separation documents and other listings.
Please share your records with us and help restore the service history of those whose records were lost - as well as share your stories in an interview.
Wartime and peacetime veterans welcome, including Merchant Marines.

I think it is very nice of you to reguard Vets in high esteem. Keep up the good work.
Nice way to honor our vets... Luckily I served from 1977-1987 so I suspect my records are still intact somewhere in the bowels of Uncle Sam's filing system...
Greg - we're happy to be of some small help to this project.
Steve - it doesn't seem to be common knowledge that so many records were lost. Nice to know we back up our back up copies these days.
But if you've never had an interview with any Veterans History Project volunteer organization, that may be something you want to think about doing. You get a copy of the interview, a copy is sent to the National Archives (for any wartime veteran), and a copy is usually kept with the local organization as well.
Being part of these interviews is certainly awe-inspiring, and every veteran, war or peace, has personal stories to share.
Hi Penny,
I hope lots of veterans respond and share their stories, it is so important to preserve history.
I have a friend who knew nothing of his ancestry- his parents had divorced when he was young and his father lived a thousand miles away. His wife spent three days with his father asking every question she could think of. They now have a large volume of family stories about not only the father but cousins and grandparents. There's an amazing power in stories. What some may think is insignificant becomes part of a families historical record. With veterans it's often quite difficult to ask for such stories... many of the memories are too painful. It's great though that there's an effort underway to recover these stories for generations to come. The impact is everlasting.
Cynthia - our history tells us where we've been, and where we want to go. Kudos to veterans willing to share personal stories. Every experience, no matter how mundane, gives us part of the picture.
Chuck - Wow, what a project! That volume of stories will be passed down for generations. His wife deserves a lot of thanks for taking it on herself to capture the family history.
